Componer, Descomponer, Recomponer
Salon Comunal, Bogotá, Colombia, 2019
The procedure is simple but labor-intensive: for the small paintings exhibited in this show, paint does not appear through addition but through subtraction. A surface previously painted with layers of different colors is gradually revealed as those layers are removed, producing an almost chance-driven image. It also becomes evident that many of the small canvases were not intact surfaces but rather sewn-together fragments.
Thus, the paintings are not evidence of the artist’s subjectivity, nor are they a spiritual quest manifested as an abstract image. They are, if you will, the very image of painting as trace. What is significant is that the subtractive process reveals not so much the colors themselves, but the support on which they depend.
